Accountability for the KPO Scandal: Public Opinion Highlights Main Culprit

The KPO scandal has shaken public opinion in Poland. It turned out that subsidies covered yachts, tanning salons, or mobile coffee machines, and the beneficiaries of the funding were often individuals linked to the currently ruling coalition. Poles have little doubt about who is responsible for this situation.

The latest United Surveys poll conducted for Wirtualna Polska indicates who Poles blame for the scandal involving funds from the National Recovery Plan. As many as 49.2% of respondents believe that Donald Tusk’s government is primarily responsible for the KPO scandal. Meanwhile, 41.9% blame the previous administration of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. The remaining 8.9% have no clear opinion on the matter.

Poles believe Tusk’s government is to blame for the KPO scandal

It is worth noting that the scandal concerns KPO funds, which were intended to support economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, not to finance luxury or controversial projects such as yachts for entrepreneurs, tanning salons, or a swingers’ club. The uncovered cases raise doubts about the mechanisms of oversight for the allocated funds. At the same time, the actions taken by Tusk’s government after the scandal broke also raise certain concerns.

Minister for Funds Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, commenting on the projects under review that had sparked doubts, spoke with considerable restraint. “There will be no heads rolling, because people must feel secure in their use of public funds,” she declared.
