Anne Applebaum, renowned American journalist and wife of Polish Minister of foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, has reignited her criticism of Donald Trump in an interview with Catalonia’s La Vanguardia. She accused the former U.S. president of posing significant threats to American institutions and aligning with interests counter to democratic values.
Applebaum claimed Trump’s plans could “destroy the U.S. military, the FBI, and the Department of Justice,” citing recent Republican nominations to key positions as evidence of incompetence and ulterior motives. According to her, such actions reflect Trump’s vision to reshape government for his goals, with far-reaching consequences.
The journalist also warned of Trump’s support for fossil fuels, mass deportations, and media suppression, claiming, “Many journalists have received explicit threats.” Furthermore, she criticized Elon Musk’s management of X (formerly Twitter), linking it to Trump’s influence.
In a pointed remark, Applebaum labeled Trump “an ideal candidate for Russia and China,” accusing him of undermining democratic norms and pleasing authoritarian regimes opposed to Western values.
The comments add to the political intrigue surrounding Radosław Sikorski, who is vying for Poland’s presidency under the Civic Coalition. Sikorski, however, distanced himself from discussions involving Trump’s associates, dismissing recent meetings with figures linked to the former U.S. president as “below his level.”
