Müller Raises Alarm Over EU-Mercosur Deal: “The European Commission Does Not Plan a New Impact Assessment”

Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Piotr Müller has revealed that the European Commission does not intend to prepare a new comprehensive impact assessment of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement during its provisional implementation. According to the politician, Brussels’ decision raises serious concerns and could make it more difficult to evaluate the agreement’s actual impact on European agriculture.

Commission Does Not Plan a New Analysis

The trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries has faced strong opposition across Europe for months. Critics argue that increased imports of agricultural products from South America could negatively affect European food producers.

On the issue, Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Piotr Müller published the European Commission’s response to what he described as the most pressing questions. According to the response, the Commission does not intend to prepare a new comprehensive assessment of the agreement’s effects once its provisional application begins.

“In response to my inquiry, the Commission admitted that it does NOT plan a new comprehensive impact assessment during the provisional implementation of the agreement,” Piotr Müller wrote.

According to the MEP, Brussels intends to rely on an analysis prepared before the agreement enters into force.

“Instead, it boasts that it published an analysis of the agreement’s theoretical effects in June 2025. Why does Brussels prefer to rely on estimates made months ago instead of conducting a thorough assessment of how the agreement will affect Polish and European farmers once it is actually in force?” Müller asked.

The MEP suggested that the lack of updated analyses could make it more difficult to assess the agreement’s real-world consequences.

“Is this a deliberate attempt to avoid hard data in order to make it easier to push these regulations through the European Parliament?” the politician wrote, while also encouraging internet users to join the discussion.
