Another Committee Meeting Canceled – This Time It Was Supposed to Discuss the Controversial Migration Pact Inconvenient for Trzaskowski

Following the cancellation of the parliamentary committee on special services, the European Union Affairs Committee has now also been called off. In this case, Law and Justice (PiS) MPs had prepared a draft resolution calling on the government to withdraw from the EU migration pact. The meeting had been scheduled for… after the elections. Sensitive topics continue to pile up for the ruling coalition’s candidate.

The PiS-authored draft resolution urging the government to unilaterally withdraw from the migration pact stated that the government cannot accept provisions that “would undermine the security of our country and its citizens.” The draft was due to be discussed at Wednesday’s EU Affairs Committee meeting — which was canceled.

At a press conference, PiS MPs Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk and Rafał Bochenek, both members of the committee, criticized the cancellation, claiming it was deliberate. Szynkowski vel Sęk noted that the resolution was submitted back in February and had been “frozen for many months.” The committee meeting was convened under Article 152(2) of the Sejm Rules, which requires the committee chair to call a meeting upon a written request from at least one-third of its members in order to consider a specific matter.

“Last night, an emergency meeting of the EU Affairs Committee presidium was called for 9:15 AM. During that meeting, coalition members unanimously — and without much explanation — decided to postpone the committee session to June 4, which is after the presidential election,” said the PiS MP.

According to him, when it comes to the migration pact, Prime Minister Donald Tusk “says one thing” domestically, while PO politicians “do something entirely different” at the European level. He claimed that Civic Platform (PO) intends to implement the migration pact but doesn’t want to discuss it during the election campaign.

“The fact is that work on the migration pact (…) accelerated rapidly a week after Donald Tusk became Prime Minister of Poland,” said Bochenek, pointing out that a deal on the matter was first reached within EU institutions in December 2023.
