“Had the investigation continued, it would have hurt the current government because it would have destroyed what little contact it still has with the civilized world. These ties are already very weak. The current government, in reality, carries little weight anywhere in the world, and attempts to summon people such as Donald Trump, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, and senior members of the European Parliament as witnesses only made it look ridiculous,” Tomasz Sakiewicz said today, commenting on prosecutors’ decision to discontinue the investigation into the organization of the CPAC conference in Poland.
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Rzeszów has discontinued its investigation into allegations that members of the Podkarpackie regional executive board exceeded their authority and unlawfully used public funds to finance the CPAC conference held on May 26-27, 2025, at the ZEN.com EXPO Exhibition and Congress Centre of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship in Jasionka, near Rzeszów. The case concerned public funding amounting to PLN 1.2 million. The investigation was launched following a complaint filed by Krzysztof Kłak, a member of the Podkarpackie Regional Assembly.
The evidence gathered during the investigation did not confirm that any criminal offense had been committed.
As part of the proceedings, prosecutors summoned several TV Republika journalists to testify as witnesses, including the station’s CEO, Tomasz Sakiewicz.
“There was a huge scandal because we had allegedly organized something highly illegal by inviting half of the U.S. administration, representatives of major institutions, and leading figures from the conservative political, economic, and media world. The former head of the BND [Germany’s foreign intelligence service] was there as well, a figure who, I imagine, is quite significant to the current authorities. Yet all of this was portrayed as illegal and suspicious. I was even fined for allegedly refusing to testify,” Sakiewicz said today on TV Republika.
“The problem I faced was that certain matters are protected by journalistic privilege. On top of that, the demand that I identify Secret Service agents, whose names I simply could not have known, was absurd. Continuing the investigation would have hurt the current government because it would have destroyed what little contact it still has with the civilized world. Those ties are already very weak. The current government, in reality, carries little weight anywhere in the world, and attempts to summon people such as Donald Trump, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, and senior members of the European Parliament as witnesses only made it look ridiculous,” he added.
