“The Speaker of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, has led to a serious crisis in relations with the United States,” said on Monday Rafał Leśkiewicz, spokesperson for President Karol Nawrocki. He assessed the situation this way in response to the U.S. ambassador’s reaction to a statement by the Left politician in which he attacked Donald Trump. According to Leśkiewicz, the ruling coalition may now face serious difficulties because of it.
On February 5, the United States Ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, announced the immediate suspension of all relations with Włodzimierz Czarzasty. This decision was linked to a public attack directed at American leader Donald Trump. As the ambassador emphasized, “outrageous and unjustified insults directed at President Donald Trump have seriously damaged our excellent relations with Prime Minister Tusk and his government.”
The matter was discussed on Monday on TV Republika by Rafał Leśkiewicz, spokesperson for President Karol Nawrocki. “This is indeed troubling, but the signal, or rather the lack of a signal, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs seems to be evidence that this position may not have been fully coordinated between Speaker Czarzasty and Minister Sikorski, because without a doubt Mr. Czarzasty’s statement has put those currently in power in a very difficult position,” he said.
“But here, Prime Minister Donald Tusk can place the blame solely on himself for deciding to appoint such a politician to head the Polish parliament, someone who is unable to maintain proper relations,”
he stressed.
In Leśkiewicz’s view, Czarzasty “has indeed led to a serious crisis in relations with the United States.” “The good transatlantic relations, carefully built over many years, good relations with our largest ally, he is trying to undermine. Fortunately, he has not succeeded,” he stated.
As he assessed, fortunately, President Nawrocki maintains good relations with the U.S. “A few days after Mr. Czarzasty’s unfortunate and foolish statement, the president traveled to Italy for the opening of the Olympic Games, where he met, among others, Vice President Vance. He also has good contacts with President Donald Trump and ensured that there would be no reduction of American forces in Poland, meaning that nearly 10,000 soldiers will remain stationed here, strengthening our security as a frontline country on NATO’s eastern flank. It is thanks to President Nawrocki that we have found ourselves in the elite G20 club, and in December, we will attend the summit of the world’s largest economies in Miami,” he listed.
“I hope this was the first and last time Mr. Czarzasty behaved so irresponsibly at the diplomatic and international level, and that he receives a serious reprimand from both Prime Minister Tusk and Minister Sikorski, because this was extremely irresponsible,”
he concluded.
