Die Welt presents great results for Polish education reform

Die Welt: “In Poland, student performance has improved more than in any other EU country since 2000. Not a lot of money is spent on education there. The successes can be traced back directly to radical school reform – it would be easily transferrable.”

Die Welt ("The World") is a German national daily newspaper, published as a broadsheet by Axel Springer SE. Die Welt is the flagship newspaper of the Axel Springer publishing group. Its leading competitors are the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Frankfurter Rundschau. The modern paper takes a self-described "liberal cosmopolitan" position in editing, but it is generally considered to be conservative.

OECD experts presented the PISA results for 2000.

According to Die Welt, the study conducted by the OECD in 2000 shows that Polish students scored below the OECD average in skills such as reading, writing, and counting, as well as science subjects.

“However, since then Polish students have continuously improved in all these areas and today the country has one of the most successful educational systems in international comparison. In the last PISA study before the coronavirus pandemic in 2018, Polish schools were among the world leaders in reading, math and science skills.”

Among the EU countries, only Estonia achieves similarly good results, but this small country with only 1.3 million inhabitants can only be a role model to a limited extent.

“Germany can learn a lot from Poland. Polish students still achieve excellent results, which have been improving for years.”,

confirms Andreas Schleicher, responsible for the PISA study on behalf of the OECD.

In his opinion, the success of the Polish education system “can be directly attributed to the radical reform of education and the updating of curricula”.
