Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski, the former head of the surgery department at Warsaw’s South Hospital, who has publicly alleged serious irregularities at the facility, has been questioned by the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office since around 10:00 a.m. According to prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba, the office’s spokesperson, the hearing is expected to continue for several more hours.
Dr. Jędrzejewski appeared before prosecutors accompanied by his legal counsel, attorney Tomasz Jendrasiak. Monday’s session marks his second interview in the investigation concerning the hospital.
The hearing began shortly after 10:00 a.m.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba briefed journalists gathered at the prosecutor’s office.
“The hearing is taking place in an air-conditioned room, with regular breaks being provided. At the request of both the witness and his attorney, there is a clear intention to complete the questioning without interruption and without scheduling another date. We expect it to continue for several more hours. I have been informed that the hearing has been very productive,” Skiba said.
Dr. Jędrzejewski was first questioned by the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office last Wednesday, following allegations he made during an interview on Kanał Zero the previous evening. In that interview, he claimed that medical procedures in the emergency department of South Hospital had been carried out improperly and alleged that medical errors had led to complications which, in some cases, resulted in patients’ deaths.
During his initial appearance before prosecutors, the former department head stated that he did not wish to testify without legal representation.
“He informed us that he had not yet been able to appoint legal counsel. He made a brief statement explaining that he was unable to testify that day and requested that the hearing be postponed,” prosecutor Skiba said at the time.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Jędrzejewski was informed that postponing the hearing at that stage was not possible. A new hearing was subsequently scheduled for Monday, June 29.
Two separate investigations are currently underway in connection with South Hospital. The first concerns alleged fraud involving more than PLN 500,000. The second focuses on alleged abuse of authority by a public official, including suspected violations of emergency department triage procedures used to classify patients.
