From Administrative Desk to Espionage Charges: Why a Polish Defence Ministry Employee Could Vacation in Belarus

An employee of the Ministry of National Defence (MON), arrested today on suspicion of cooperating with a foreign intelligence service, had a fondness for Belarus and travelled there many times on holiday, the Niezalezna.pl portal has learned. Most recently, in September 2025, he was caught off guard by the decision to close the border with Poland. As a result, he reportedly applied to the ministry for an extension of his leave.

“Today, in the morning hours, an arrest was carried out at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defence (al. Niepodległości, Warsaw) of a long-serving employee of the Ministry of National Defence,” the ministry said on social media. It added that “charges of cooperation with a foreign intelligence service have been brought against the individual.”

The individual has been charged with cooperating with a foreign intelligence service. The case is being handled by the Military Counterintelligence Service, which cooperated during the arrest with the Military Affairs Department of the National Prosecutor’s Office and the Military Police, it was reported.

It was added that “procedural activities are currently under way.”

What was he responsible for at the MON?

According to information obtained by Niezalezna.pl, the suspect had worked at the MON since the early 1990s. For years he held the same civilian position of “specialist.” He was neither demoted nor promoted. In recent years, the more than 60-year-old man worked in the Department of Strategy and Defence Planning. Before 2024, he dealt mainly with purely administrative matters. Among other things, he was reportedly responsible for supplying water to employees. He did not work on key documents. He had the access rights and clearances required for a “specialist” position, renewed many times over a very long career at the MON.

Belarusian holidays

As we hear, he was considered a bit of an oddball. He had no wife or children. He did, however, show a fascination with Belarus, our sources say. As we have learned, he often visited the country, travelling there, among other things, on numerous holidays.

On 9 September 2025, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that on 12 September the Polish–Belarusian border would be closed “in connection with the growing number of provocations from the East.” Unfortunately for the man accused of espionage, he was at that time on one of his “Belarusian holidays.” He submitted a request to the MON to extend his leave due to difficulties crossing the Polish–Belarusian border, Niezalezna.pl has learned.

How does this square with information reported by Onet that “the Military Counterintelligence Service had been monitoring his activities for months, possessing very strong evidence”? For how many months? Since September? And why, in 2025, amid a tense geopolitical situation, did an MON employee have the ability to move freely around Belarus, with the consent and approval of his superiors?

The detained man, during the years 1996–1997, when the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) was in power, published two books in cooperation with the MON’s publishing house, devoted to security in Southern Europe.

Media reports about the detained ministry employee were confirmed by the Ministry of National Defence. In its initial statement, the MON included information that the detainee “has been charged with cooperating with a foreign intelligence service.” After an update, this information disappeared; it was stated only that he is suspected of cooperating with a foreign intelligence service.
