“Negotiations with the PiS leadership lasted a dozen or so hours over three days—Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,” said MP Paweł Jabłoński, who served as the Rozwój Plus association’s negotiator on behalf of Mateusz Morawiecki’s camp. According to him, most of the talks were held with PiS Secretary General Piotr Milowański.
At midnight on Thursday, the deadline set by the PiS leadership for party MPs to submit declarations confirming they did not belong to political associations expired. The issue primarily concerned members of the Rozwój Plus association founded by former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
On Friday, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński announced at a press conference that the party’s Political Committee would, at its meeting next Tuesday, “take note” of the departure of the group of politicians associated with Morawiecki.
Later the same day, Mateusz Morawiecki, who heads the Rozwój Plus association, told a press conference that his political camp consists of “40 MPs, one senator and three Members of the European Parliament.” He described it as a very strong representation and argued that he and other members of the association had fought to preserve “the unity of the Law and Justice camp.”
“A glimmer of hope until the very end”
Asked on Friday about the developments, Paweł Jabłoński said the outcome was “sad” and that he felt “disappointed,” because until the very end he “still had a glimmer of hope that something would change.” At the same time, he admitted that the result had not come as a surprise, as “this is how things had been unfolding for several days.”
“This is a bad outcome. Jacek Sasin is happy, Jacek Kurski is happy, (Tobiasz) Bocheński, (Patryk) Jaki, a few others as well. And Tusk (Prime Minister Donald Tusk – PAP) is happy too,” Jabłoński concluded.
Jabłoński confirmed that he had negotiated a possible agreement between the faction associated with the Rozwój Plusassociation and the PiS leadership.
“The talks were with Piotr Milowański, the party’s secretary general, but also with the party chairman (Jarosław Kaczyński – PAP),” he said.
Proposals “to be accepted or modified”
According to Jabłoński, Milowański made a “constructive” effort to be “very helpful.” He assessed that the intensive discussions—which lasted a total of a dozen or so hours over three days—had progressed well.
He explained that the negotiations consisted of developing “various ideas,” with a total of 21 proposals eventually compiled into a single list. The figure of 21 proposals from Morawiecki’s faction to the PiS leadership had previously appeared in media reports.
According to Jabłoński, all of those proposals were open “to be accepted or modified.”
“These were ideas that we developed and presented to the party chairman, following discussions with Milowański,” Jabłoński said.
In his view, however, the fundamental problem was that “even the best-written agreement cannot come into force if there is no political decision.”
“And the political decision that was made was a different one. Unfortunately, it has now been implemented,” Jabłoński concluded.
Paweł Jabłoński is currently a member of the Sejm. During the Law and Justice government, he served in Mateusz Morawiecki’s cabinet as an adviser to the prime minister and as Deputy Foreign Minister between 2019 and 2023.
