“You don’t have to be a history buff to know that when Germans interfere in Polish affairs, it always ends tragically,” wrote Mateusz Morawiecki, former Polish Prime Minister, on social media, referring, of course, to the recent remarks made by the German Chancellor regarding the outcome of the presidential election in Poland.
On Friday, the German Chancellor’s comments stirred public debate in Poland. In a public statement, he expressed regret over the choice made by Polish voters in the presidential election.
Responding to a journalist’s question during the annual “summer press conference”, Friedrich Merz said:
“I admit, I was hoping for a different outcome in the Polish presidential election. This result is also causing some concern in France.”
Morawiecki: He Missed a Good Opportunity
The German politician’s remarks received a strong response from Poland’s political right, as well as from supporters of Karol Nawrocki. Yesterday, former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also responded to Merz’s statement via social media.
“By choosing to comment on the outcome of the Polish elections, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz missed a good opportunity to refrain from continuing Germany’s long-standing habit of lecturing Poles. You don’t have to be a history buff to know that when Germans interfere in Polish matters, it always ends in tragedy,” said the Law and Justice (PiS) politician.
