Germany Tightens Migration Laws, Shifting the Burden to Poland

Germany has introduced stricter asylum policies, offering only basic support to illegal migrants for two weeks. Critics argue that Berlin is shifting the migration burden onto neighboring countries, particularly Poland.

Germany has significantly tightened its migration policies, drastically limiting the rights of illegal immigrants. According to the German tabloid Tageszeitung, the German government aims to deport illegal migrants as quickly and on as large a scale as possible, with a strong focus on sending them to Poland.

Berlin’s new regulations reduce state-provided support for illegal migrants to just two weeks, covering only basic necessities such as food and shelter. Tageszeitung bluntly states:

“The political goal of this measure is clear – refugees must leave, and as quickly as possible.”

The newspaper accuses German authorities of effectively abolishing the right to asylum. Journalist Susanna Memarnia argues:

“Germany has delegated the asylum problem to its European neighbors.”

She highlights that these new policies place an unfair burden on neighboring countries, especially those sharing a border with Germany. A key element of this strategy appears to be the opening of a new migrant center in Eisenhüttenstadt, located directly on the Polish border, starting March 1.

With these moves, Germany is taking a tough stance on illegal immigration, but at the potential cost of straining relations with its EU partners—particularly Poland, which now faces an increased influx of migrants due to Berlin’s shifting policies.
