High-Level Polish-American Strategic Talks in Washington Focus on NATO’s Eastern Flank

Polish-American talks were held in Washington regarding the U.S. strategy and Poland’s role on NATO’s eastern flank. “They were of very great significance. The point was for us to inquire about certain matters, to better understand the priorities the Americans adopt around the world, and for us, as a state that is a strategic partner for the United States, to be able to design our strategic documents in a better way,” said Gen. Andrzej Kowalski, Deputy Head of the National Security Bureau (BBN).

Strategic Polish-American talks took place in Washington

“These talks were of very great significance. The point was for us to inquire about certain matters, to better understand the priorities the Americans adopt around the world, and for us, as a state that is a strategic partner for the United States, to be able to design our strategic documents in a better way – documents in which we must build reference to how our strategic ally perceives threats and opportunities in the contemporary world. The talks in the Pentagon and the National Security Council were important for us, because we could ask about details that cannot be discussed in the document and that remain covered by a veil of secrecy, and which may later be reflected in certain decisions or actions taken by the current U.S. administration, especially when it comes to issues of deploying U.S. Armed Forces in different parts of the world, but also more broadly in terms of maintaining certain capabilities, military presence, and sustaining deterrence functions in particularly sensitive regions,”

he reported.

He emphasized that “the next part of the visit will play out through direct relations with the United States, through our continued discussions and the fairly intensive work that will result from adapting our strategic documents to the broader vision articulated by our strategic partner.”

The Deputy Head of the BBN was also asked about a possible ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

“To a great extent, the U.S. Security Strategy shows the point of view of that state on the main strategic flashpoints. The structure of this document is such that it describes the situation both in the region of the Western sphere and elsewhere. The document does not devote much attention to the war in Ukraine, which might be interpreted as a kind of disregard or the assumption that the topic is insignificant. That is not true. What is necessary now is to seriously attempt to bring about an end to the fighting, potentially a ceasefire. It is not, as some commentators suggest, that the Americans want to force a quick end to the conflict. They are aware that this is a very long-term and complicated process. It is clearly visible in the arguments of our American partners that they would like to stop hostilities, because they believe that at this point the prospect of continuation does not lead to a good scenario,”

he declared.

He also pointed out that “President Trump’s position is very significant in all of these talks.”

“Let us remember that negotiations take place behind closed doors between envoys. From their perspective, it is a much more difficult process. The language of politicians is a language in which certain shortcuts are used. The language of negotiators must take into account the very complex situation that currently exists, and which, in my view, has no simple solution. Moreover, from our perspective, the most important thing is for it to be a solution that does not result in a regrouping of forces and the start of a renewed conflict within the next two years,”

he stated.
