On July 17, 2022, a solemn field Mass at the 2nd Polish Corps War Cemetery in Loreto marked the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Ancona by General Władysław Anders’ soldiers.
Veterans, Polish 2nd Corps soldiers, and dignitaries including Anna Maria Anders, attended. Jan Józef Kasprzyk highlighted the historical significance of the Polish 2nd Corps’ achievements in Italy during WWII.
Battle and Sacrifice
In 1944, fierce battles raged in Italy as Allied forces clashed with the Wehrmacht. The Polish 2nd Corps, after their victory at Monte Cassino, successfully captured Ancona, a key port on July 18, 1944. This victory was crucial for further liberation efforts.
Over 1,080 Polish soldiers who died liberating the Marche region are buried at Loreto’s cemetery. Ms. Anders emphasized the enduring Polish-Italian camaraderie forged in these battles.
A Day of Reflection
Ms. Anders and local officials stressed the importance of remembering the past to safeguard the future. Jan Józef Kasprzyk awarded medals to distinguished individuals, and wreaths were laid to honor the fallen.
