“Hospital of Death” Scandal: Opposition Demands Probe as Pressure Mounts on Tusk

“Let us not allow this enormous scandal to be covered up. I demand the establishment of a public investigative committee as soon as possible. Donald Tusk and others responsible for what happened should face consequences,” announced Mateusz Morawiecki, former Prime Minister, referring to the latest developments in the massive scandal surrounding the Southern Hospital.

New facts about the scandal at the Southern Hospital

Further, increasingly shocking threads of the scandal surrounding the Southern Hospital are coming to light. Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski, former head of surgery and one of the doctors exposing the case, spoke during a live interview on Kanał Zero about dramatic events in the Emergency Department. According to his account, errors and negligence allegedly occurred in the ward, resulting in patient deaths. At that time, the Emergency Department was managed by Dawid Kacprzyk – a doctor and city councillor of Civic Platform (KO).

Jędrzejewski argued that Kacprzyk allegedly felt untouchable due to his political connections. As the former head of surgery claimed, in conversations the doctor reportedly referred, among others, to the Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski and his deputy Renata Kaznowska.

Politicians from Law and Justice (PiS) addressed the matter during a press conference.

“Yesterday, Poland came to a halt. What we learned from the interview with Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski is breathtaking and simply terrifying. With every new piece of information, we know more and more. We are talking about a case in which there is death, human suffering, and perhaps even desecration of corpses. All of this was allegedly happening in a situation where party nominees and apparatchiks of Civic Platform – like an octopus – took control of one of the units of the Southern Hospital,” said Mateusz Morawiecki.

In his view, “these circumstances should be clarified by the prosecutor’s office, but another mechanism is also needed, which we will propose shortly.”

“We are dealing with a case in which Civic Platform’s party umbrella was allegedly protecting a broad network. Dawid Kacprzyk, a party nominee, allegedly engaged in actions resulting in losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of zlotys. After yesterday’s interview, dramatic questions have also emerged as to whether his actions or omissions may have contributed to patient deaths, loss of health, and gruesome situations that allegedly occurred in the Emergency Department of the Southern Hospital in Warsaw. And all of this was allegedly happening under the watch of Civic Platform’s top authorities – people who have been responsible for Warsaw for years,” he added.

“I demand the establishment of an investigative committee”

The Law and Justice (PiS) MP stressed that it is necessary to establish an investigative committee in this case.

“What other facts do we still not know about the Southern Hospital in Warsaw? What else remains hidden? How long will we watch human suffering and the silence of the current Prime Minister, Donald Tusk? Let us not allow this enormous scandal to be covered up. I demand the establishment of an investigative committee – a public investigative committee – as soon as possible. Not more superficial procedures. Not actions that society perceives as an attempt to wait the matter out. People are already mocking the ‘Żurek procedures’, claiming they operate at Donald Tusk’s whistle. It cannot be that major pathologies connected with Civic Platform remain unexplained because the Neumann doctrine is still in force,” he said.

In his opinion, “Donald Tusk and others responsible for what happened should face consequences, and should at least appear before a public investigative committee that will not allow this gigantic, macabre and monstrous scandal to be swept under the rug.”

Further reactions

Olga Semeniuk-Patkowska pointed out that “yesterday the medical community – people who save lives every day and care for the health of our loved ones – said: stop to pathology in Warsaw.”

“And the immediate question arises: is it only in Warsaw? The medical community also said: stop to the Warsaw system. As a former Warsaw city councillor, I receive information from nurses, paramedics and other medical staff. This concerns, among other things, the possible abuse of the system and artificial inflation of the number of commercial diagnostic orders at the Southern Hospital. The prosecutor’s office must clarify all the circumstances as soon as possible – those that Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski spoke about yesterday. Additionally, Deputy Mayor Renata Kaznowska, referred to as the ‘Warsaw baroness’, until 2025 was responsible not only for education, health and sports policy, but also for the city’s real estate policy. At the beginning of this year, she handed over supervision of development and real estate matters to the new Deputy Mayor Karolina Bober,” she emphasized.

She added that “Renata Kaznowska had and still has influence over the most important areas of the functioning of the capital city of Warsaw – including those where pathologies occur.”

“Once again, I stress: yesterday the medical community, responsible for daily work for the health and saving the lives of our families, said ‘stop’ to the Warsaw system. Therefore, the establishment of a public investigative committee must become a reality. Society has the right to know what has been happening in Warsaw in recent years,” she concluded.
