Hubert Hurkacz and Jan Zieliński secured a vital victory against Uzbekistan’s Fomin and Sultanov, clinching a 7:6(1), 6:4 triumph. This, combined with earlier wins by Hurkacz and Kaśnikowski, catapulted Poland into the prestigious World Group I of the Davis Cup.
Poland, led by standout performer Hurkacz, entered the match as favourites, claiming the first point with Hurkacz’s win over Fomin. Despite Kaśnikowski’s success against Sultanov, Poland needed one more victory on Saturday to seal the deal.
In a morning showdown, Hurkacz and Zieliński faced an initial challenge as Fomin and Sultanov took an unexpected lead. The Polish duo, however, rallied back from a 1:3 deficit, levelling the score at 3:3. A dominant tie-break performance secured a 7:6(1) victory for Poland.
The disrupted rhythm in the first set didn’t deter Hurkacz and Zieliński. Breaking their opponents for the second time in the third game, they defended break points in the subsequent service game, securing a confident victory.
With this triumph and earlier wins, Poland celebrates a return to the elite World Group I for the first time since 2015.
