“I fully agree with Tusk.” Strong statement from Szydło on the Polish coal giant

Without Polish coking coal, there will be no European steel. Meanwhile, more and more signs (such as statements by Minister Motyka) indicate that Donald Tusk’s government is pushing toward the liquidation of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) – warned former Prime Minister Beata Szydło on X. She cited a quote from the Prime Minister with which she fully agrees.

The condition of Poland’s steel industry is deteriorating. Workers from the sector protested today in Katowice, where – with the participation of Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka – the Energy Days conference was inaugurated. The minister assured steelworkers that Poland would limit steel imports from Ukraine; he also said that he “himself is not a fan of the Green Deal.”

“The volume of steel imported from countries such as Ukraine and Serbia is also rising rapidly. These are European countries but not members of the European Union and therefore not subject to the ETS system,” explained Jolanta Gruszka, vice president of Poland’s coal giant, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, at the conference.

The outlook for JSW is not optimistic; so far, the government has not presented an official plan to support the coal giant.

Former Prime Minister Beata Szydło commented on the situation of the steel sector and JSW on X.

“I fully agree with Donald Tusk! Yes, I agree with the words of Donald Tusk, who today said, and I quote: ‘Reality is a matter of security, and security means armaments, armaments mean steel, and steel means reindustrialization. We must be self-sufficient; we cannot outsource our security outside.’

She pointed out that the Prime Minister failed to mention one thing.

“Armaments mean steel, but STEEL MEANS COAL. Specifically, coking coal, essential for the operation of steel plants,” Szydło stressed.

“The largest producer of coking coal in the EU is the Polish mining company JSW. In the current situation, its operations are of strategic importance for Poland and for the entire EU. Without Polish coking coal, there will be no European steel. Meanwhile, more and more signs (such as statements by Minister Motyka) indicate that Donald Tusk’s government is aiming to liquidate JSW. Which means, as always, Tusk says one thing and does another, while simultaneously playing with the security of Poland and the entire EU,” she concluded.
