Intimidation of Media? Law and Justice (PiS) Sounds Alarm Over Actions Against TV Republika – Błaszczak Announces Emergency Move

“The Law and Justice (PiS) parliamentary caucus will submit a motion for an extraordinary session of the Sejm’s Internal Affairs and Administration Committee in connection with actions by the services targeting TV Republika,” announced Mariusz Błaszczak, head of the Law and Justice parliamentary caucus.

Harassment campaign against journalists

Recently, there has been an increasing number of actions directed against journalists of TV Republika. The police receive reports concerning alleged threats or possible crimes and then intervene against the station’s employees.

On Friday, officers appeared at the home of Tomasz Sakiewicz, which also serves as an editorial office. During the intervention, his assistant was detained and handcuffed. The CEO of TV Republika stressed that this was another operation by the services at this address triggered by a false alarm. He also pointed out that the intervening officers had no visible identification or badge numbers, refused to provide their details, and behaved aggressively.

Only nearly 24 hours after the incident did the Warsaw Metropolitan Police Headquarters issue a statement informing about the detention of a person suspected of making false reports. According to available information, the arrest took place in one of the counties near Warsaw.

In connection with what the opposition describes as scandalous actions by the police, which fall under the authority of the ministry headed by Marcin Kierwiński, concrete steps are being announced. The head of the Law and Justice (PiS) caucus, Mariusz Błaszczak, wrote in a post on X that “yesterday’s events are a scandal and an attempt to intimidate independent media and the opposition!”

“The Law and Justice (PiS) caucus will submit a motion for an extraordinary session of the Sejm’s Internal Affairs and Administration Committee in connection with actions by the services targeting TV Republika and the staff of the office of MP Dariusz Matecki,” he announced.

The politician emphasized that “the state cannot be used for a political vendetta against those who have the courage to criticize the authorities.”
