Italy Faces Pizza Baker Shortage Amid Global Pizza Boom

Italy, the birthplace of Neapolitan pizza, faces an alarming shortage of pizzaioli—pizza bakers—and other pizzeria staff. This crisis is particularly evident in Naples, where the art of pizza-making holds deep cultural significance. The True Neapolitan Pizza Association (AVPN) warns that the sector urgently needs workers to sustain its global reputation.

    A Booming Industry Lacking Workers

Antonio Pace, president of AVPN, highlights the paradox of a flourishing pizza industry generating billions globally but lacking hands to meet demand. He stresses that young people have a promising future in this gastronomic field, both in Italy and abroad. However, the physically demanding nature of the work, often performed during social hours, deters many from pursuing it as a career.

Despite the challenges, the pizza industry offers financial stability and significant growth opportunities, as noted by Antonio Marchiello, head of entrepreneurship for the Campania region. He urges the youth to consider this rewarding path, echoing Pace’s sentiment that pizza-making is more than a job—it’s a fulfilling career.

With approximately 20,000 pizza bakers needed nationwide, Italy must act to bridge this gap and ensure its pizza legacy thrives.
