Kaczyński Condemns Planned Charges Against PiS MPs: “We Will Defend Them – This Is Unprecedented”

The announcement of charges to be brought against MPs Michał Woś and Dariusz Matecki has sparked a political storm. The leader of Law and Justice (PiS), Jarosław Kaczyński, commented on the matter, expressing clear outrage at the actions of law enforcement authorities and declaring unequivocally: “We will defend them.”

“Creating evidence is not a crime”

“What has happened is something extraordinary, unprecedented,” the PiS leader emphasized during a press conference in the Sejm. He noted that he was particularly disappointed by the lack of a firm response from certain circles, including those abroad.

“I do not hide my disappointment that various individuals did not intervene in a decisive manner, also on the international stage,”

he said.

Jarosław Kaczyński also addressed the narrative, suggesting that actions taken by politicians could form the basis for future criminal proceedings. “Anyone who records such acts thereby creates evidence for potential future criminal trials and does something useful, serving the justice system,” the PiS leader assessed.

At the same time, he warned that attempts to secure the conviction of the two MPs could themselves constitute a serious violation of the law. “Those who would like to take this matter further and bring about the conviction of both gentlemen will be committing a serious crime,” he stated.

According to PiS politicians, the announced charges are part of a broader pattern of pressure on the parliamentary opposition and attempts to restrict its activity. In the party’s view, the case of Woś and Matecki is unprecedented and will serve as a test of the rule-of-law standards in the country.

Kaczyński on the Peace Council and Relations with the U.S.

During his remarks, Jarosław Kaczyński also addressed international issues, including the idea of Poland participating in a Peace Council reportedly being established by the U.S. President. He stressed that any decision in this regard should depend on meeting specific conditions.

“If the conditions are secured, the government agrees, and one billion dollars is allocated, because it makes no sense for Poland to enter as a poor country, then we should be in the Peace Council,”

the PiS leader emphasized.

He added that relations with Washington are of key importance. “We must maintain the best possible relations with the United States, and for that very reason, we should be there,” he noted.

According to Kaczyński, both the issue of the announced charges against PiS MPs and decisions regarding Poland’s international engagement demonstrate that the country has reached a moment requiring clear decisions and the defense of national interests.
