In a Friday interview with one of the largest Western newspapers – the “Financial Times” – Donald Tusk, the head of the Polish government, questioned the “loyalty” of Poland’s most important ally – the United States. At the same time, he called for “strengthening the EU’s mutual defense clause”. Tusk said in the interview that “the biggest and most important question for Europe is whether the United States is ready to be as loyal as described in our treaties (NATO)”.
Many commentators pointed out that this was a direct attack on Polish-American relations and on our strongest ally, also within NATO.
Yesterday, Tomasz Szatkowski, former Polish ambassador to NATO, returning from talks in the United States, assessed that “Poland does not seem to be a beneficiary of the trend”, in the US aimed at talks and seeking common ground in Europe.
“Donald Tusk’s interview in FT is just one of the strongly noted elements of this phenomenon. Meanwhile, in the Department of War, thanks to Merz’s pragmatic policy, Germany is already taking the place of the model ally”, Szatkowski indicated. His thesis was in a way confirmed by a senior US defense official, Elbridge Colby, who praised Germany for its leading role in building NATO 3.0.
Kaczyński: Tusk was provoked
Today, the consequences of Tusk’s interview for the “FT” were assessed on social media by the leader of Law and Justice (PiS), Jarosław Kaczyński.
“Once again Tusk let himself be provoked and carried out instructions from Berlin, attacking the Americans and de facto undermining the meaning of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which guarantees mutual allied defense”, Kaczyński wrote.

Yesterday, in a conversation with journalists, Kaczyński emphasized that Tusk is torpedoing the Polish-American alliance.
“At this moment, the guarantee of our security is the alliance with the United States, and the chance of increasing the number of American soldiers in Poland and establishing a permanent base – I do not know whether it will materialize. Tusk is doing everything to prevent it. That [would be] a serious increase in our security. Above all, we must arm ourselves, (…) we must have a very strong army, certain laws would also be useful here”, he assessed.
