Karolina Muchova’s remarkable tennis season has taken an unfortunate turn as she withdraws from the WTA Finals in Cancun due to a wrist injury. The Czech player had an outstanding year, including a French Open final appearance where she faced off against Poland’s own Iga Świątek. Her career-high ranking of 8th marked a significant milestone, but her dream of participating in the WTA Finals will have to wait.

Muchova shared her disappointment, stating, “With a heavy heart, I announce my withdrawal from my first WTA Finals in Cancun. We did everything possible to heal my wrist injury, but the recovery time is longer than expected. I will do everything in my power to get another chance in 2024.”

Filling the void left by Muchova is Greece’s Maria Sakkari. The WTA Finals, set to take place from October 29 to November 5 in Cancun, will feature the top eight female players of the season, with Iga Świątek among them. On the men’s side, Hubert Hurkacz is in the hunt for qualification.
