Run to Save Endangered Species at Wrocław’s WILD RUN Charity Event

On October 6, 2024, the paths of Wrocław Zoo will once again come alive with runners as close to 1,000 participants take part in the eighth edition of the WILD RUN charity race. Organized by the Wrocław Zoo Foundation – DODO, the event aims to raise awareness and funds for the conservation of endangered species, particularly those from Asia. This year’s race will focus on protecting animals from the Indochinese Peninsula, such as the silver-backed chevrotain, hornbills, and muntjacs.

WILD RUN: A Global Charity Race Supporting Endangered Species with a Sustainable Twist

WILD RUN, which can be joined virtually from anywhere in the world, is a unique charity event where all proceeds are directed towards saving endangered species. “The key to WILD RUN is not just participating, but supporting one another. For us, the animals are the true heroes of this event, reminding us of our responsibility for their wellbeing. Every step we take during the run highlights their needs,” said Sergiusz Kmiecik, acting president of Wrocław Zoo.

The event features several categories, including a 100-meter race for children, a 1-kilometre run for youth, and a main 10-kilometre course for adults. Each participant receives a commemorative medal, with additional prizes for the fastest runners in each category. A new eco-friendly twist this year is the introduction of reusable race bibs, with rewards for those opting for this sustainable choice.

WILD RUN Raises Funds to Protect Vietnam and Laos’ Biodiversity, Supporting Six Key Conservation Organizations

Funds raised from the event will support six conservation organizations working in Vietnam and Laos to protect the region’s biodiversity, which is threatened by poaching, habitat loss, and unsustainable agriculture. These include Re:Wild, Save Vietnam’s Wildlife, and the Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife, among others.

Since its inception, WILD RUN has raised over 320,000 PLN, benefitting numerous foundations and helping to safeguard various endangered species. “It’s heartwarming to see the growing interest in this event year after year,” said Marta Gondek, president of the Wrocław Zoo Foundation – DODO and the event’s organizer.

Runners and zoo visitors on the day will experience some minor logistical adjustments, but the zoo will remain open as usual from 9 AM to 6 PM. Visitors are encouraged to cheer on the participants and cooperate with volunteers who will manage the race route.

For those who wish to support the cause remotely, virtual participation is available, and details can be found on the event’s website at wildrun.eu.
