During a broadcast on Telewizja Republika, Danuta Holecka hosted Piotr Ikonowicz and Marcin Przydacz to discuss a recent case involving a doctor from the hospital in Oleśnica, who performed an abortion in the 36th week of pregnancy. Visibly moved, Holecka made an emotional confession, her voice trembling.
The topic of conversation was the controversial abortion performed at the Oleśnica hospital at a stage of pregnancy when the child could already survive outside the womb. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Gizela Jagielska using a method known as fetal asystole induction.
Previously, a hospital in Łódź had refused to perform the abortion. Due to a diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta (a severe bone fragility disorder) in the fetus, doctors had offered a cesarean delivery instead. The woman declined and sought help at the Oleśnica hospital, which has become known for accepting abortion cases rejected elsewhere.
Marcin Przydacz reminded viewers that the Ministry of Health issued guidelines last year stating that doctors would not face prosecution for performing abortions.
“Guidelines are not the law!” emphasized the PiS politician.
On the other hand, Piotr Ikonowicz stated that “there was a real possibility that this child would live only to endure unbearable suffering.”
“To be honest, I would have ended that suffering. A life made up solely of pain is not a life worth living,” he added.
These words struck a chord with the host, Danuta Holecka.
“I would give my life—my husband’s life too—just to have my son back,” the journalist confessed.
Holecka’s son, Julian Dunin-Holecki, passed away unexpectedly on July 9, 2024, at the age of 31.
