Polish farmers protest the Mercosur deal, warning of devastating effects on local agriculture and emphasizing national solidarity.
Jan Kanthak of the Law and Justice (PiS) party has raised concerns about the EU-Mercosur trade deal, warning it could devastate Poland’s small and medium-sized farms. Speaking on TV Republika, Kanthak highlighted the challenges of competing with low-cost, lower-quality agricultural imports from South America. Comparing the situation to the impact of Ukrainian grain imports, he predicted a worsening crisis for local farmers should the deal proceed.
Protests in Warsaw underscored the unity among Polish farmers, especially in times of hardship. A participant from a flood-stricken region shared their gratitude for nationwide support. “We lost everything in Lądek-Zdrój, but farmers from across Poland delivered essential supplies like hay and silage,” the farmer shared on TV Republika, emphasizing the resilience and solidarity within the agricultural community.
As talks progress, Polish farmers and their advocates remain vocal, urging the government to reconsider the deal to protect the nation’s agricultural future.
