“Look at the current government’s philosophy: go out, promise the moon, ideally with some catchy slogan, and then… forget about it,” said Mateusz Morawiecki during a meeting in Tarnobrzeg. The former Prime Minister criticized the current government for unfulfilled promises made not so long ago.
The PiS vice-chairman stated that “the moment Donald Tusk or Rafał Trzaskowski announce something big – for the Polish nation – marks the beginning of a debate.” He continued: “Well, the Prime Minister says something, or an important presidential candidate says something, so the nation thinks: is it a good proposal or not… Believe me, they shove it into a closet, into a drawer. That idea ceases to exist.” He then gave specific examples.
“Do you remember the discussion about the ‘Iron Dome’? That was about a year and a half ago, roughly. The Iron Dome… the nation discussed it for three weeks. Since then, they haven’t produced even a single screw for that Iron Dome. They forgot about it the moment they tossed out the slogan. We were wondering – is it a German-French defense system? A security umbrella of some kind? Nothing happened on that front,” he said and continued:
“Then two months passed – and we heard about the ‘Eastern Shield.’ […] Do you think anything was actually built on that border? Massive concrete barriers? Any kind of terrain modification? Any other obstacles for the enemy? Nothing of the sort. There’s a slogan. That should be enough for you.”
Morawiecki also recalled another buzzword – the “Breakthrough Year of Investments.” “Do you remember that from three months ago? It was a thing. But it quickly turned out that – according to an independent online portal – the investment figures they boasted about were actually the lowest in 30 years. But the slogan? It’s there. Poles think: now Tusk will kickstart investments, now Trzaskowski might do something more than that 650,000 złoty toilet,” the opposition politician jabbed.
“But Poles weren’t too impressed by the ‘breakthrough year of investments’ or the ‘year of transformation.’ Two months go by – and the Prime Minister announces repolonization. In the meantime, he also managed to declare deregulation, and at the end of April he even announced that we’d be implementing the strategy of Piast Poland… So what do you think of all these slogans? I guess I also need to start making up slogans, because I was foolish enough to think we actually have to fulfill what we commit to – but apparently, you don’t have to deliver anything,” the former Prime Minister concluded.
