Morawiecki: Zelensky Bet on Tusk and Germany. That Was a Mistake

Ukraine played va banque – it trusted Berlin, Paris, and Tusk’s team. It counted on unlimited support from America. Now, it is paying for this mistake because Donald Trump is the president, and he has made things clear: no more blank checks, time for gratitude and actions toward peace. Zelensky, who ignored the conservative wing of American politics, is now facing a harsh lesson in geopolitics.

Trump, Zelensky, and the Geopolitical Puzzle
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, speaking with Krzysztof Skowroński on Radio WNET, analyzed the latest political developments and their impact on Poland and Ukraine. A key topic of discussion was the stance of the United States toward President Zelensky and the changing international landscape.

“Around the spring of 2023, President Zelensky and his team must have concluded that it was more beneficial to bet on Civic Platform, Germany, and France. In the United States, there was the good old Biden, who would likely win the presidential election, so everything would be fine,”

Morawiecki said.

However, as the former prime minister pointed out, reality has disproved these calculations to Zelensky’s and Ukraine’s disadvantage. Largely because European politicians, whom Poland’s prime minister is trying to align with, are unreliable.

“Some of the plans that President Zelensky had arranged were disrupted – President Trump won. We may have lost the election, but this is also a blow to Zelensky because, from Tusk, he may receive various words of support, but where are the German Taurus missiles that were supposed to arrive there long ago?”

Morawiecki remarked.

Trump’s Decision: Ukrainians Must Show Gratitude
Commenting on President Donald Trump’s decision on Monday to halt military aid to Ukraine, Morawiecki spoke in a measured but unequivocal manner.

“I have analyzed two statements and see that President Trump is not closing the door to an agreement with Ukraine – and that is probably the most important thing. It has been clearly emphasized that this aid suspension is a pause that must be implemented so that Ukrainians understand that they must show gratitude toward America,”

he said.

The former prime minister also pointed out ambiguities related to the rare minerals agreement for Ukraine. In his opinion, potential U.S. business investments in Ukraine would be beneficial for the country.

Presidential Elections: Nawrocki or Expensive Living!
Turning to the internal situation in Poland, Morawiecki expressed hope that Karol Nawrocki would win the May elections because otherwise, the consequences for Poles would be severe.

“If Karol Nawrocki does not win the election, prices in stores will rise even faster, the budget deficit will grow, public debt will also increase, and the cost of living for Poles will drastically strain our citizens’ wallets. The choice is clear: Karol Nawrocki or expensive living,” said Mateusz Morawiecki.

The former prime minister also commented on the credibility of promises made by the current government of Donald Tusk. In his view, reality does not match the campaign assurances.

“Take a look – what happened to the ‘100 specifics’ promised by Tusk’s government? Where is the zero VAT on public transport? Where is the increased tax-free allowance? Where are the promises to shorten waiting times for specialists?” Morawiecki listed.

In his opinion, the healthcare situation has dramatically worsened.

“Do you know what is happening in doctor’s appointment queues? In 18 or 19 key medical fields, the waiting times have lengthened – it’s a disaster,” he said.
