President-elect Karol Nawrocki gave an interview to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, in which he discussed his plans for future cooperation with the government. He stated that he does not intend to obstruct the work of the current coalition or that of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He also responded to questions regarding several high-profile legislative proposals.
What Will the President–Prime Minister Relationship Look Like?
During the interview, Karol Nawrocki reiterated his intention to be a president for all Poles and expressed his willingness to work with the government.
“In the second round of voting, I was also supported by some voters who back candidates with left-wing, social democratic, or socialist views. That was quite a surprise, but also a clear signal that I am someone capable of building bridges,” said Nawrocki.
The president-elect acknowledged that working with Donald Tusk will likely be challenging. He referenced moments from the election campaign when the Prime Minister personally attacked him and “spread disinformation.”
“If you’re asking whether I intend to be petty—my answer is no,” Nawrocki declared.
Nawrocki’s Sarcastic Remarks About Tusk
Nawrocki stated that the government can count on his support in signing a bill raising the tax-free allowance to 60,000 PLN.
“In fact, if the Sejm fails to pass such a bill in the near future, I will take the initiative and submit one myself,” he emphasized.
“I’ll give Donald Tusk those concrete actions he talks about. Isn’t that conciliatory? Isn’t that reaching out?”—this was Nawrocki’s response when asked whether he plans to address the ‘list of 100 concrete promises.’
Ideological Legislation: First, Submit the Bills
On ideological legislation, the president-elect noted that while he is a Catholic, he does not rule out discussion—provided he is presented with complete draft bills. One such proposal concerns the legal status of a “closest person.”
“If this would offer a practical solution enabling citizens to regulate formal and legal matters—regardless of whether the relationship is one of partnership, sexuality, or simply neighborhood—I see no issue with it,” Nawrocki emphasized.
