“A drowning man will clutch at straws. And here is the straw grasped by key Civic Platform politicians and the team of Mr. Rafał Trzaskowski,” began Przemysław Czarnek at a press conference, during which he read aloud both the last will and testament and a notarial deed signed between Mr. Jerzy Żywicki and the Nawrocki couple.
“Karol Nawrocki and his wife own two apartments. These properties have always been listed in his asset declarations. On legal advice, and in the interest of full transparency, Nawrocki also included in those declarations a note about a 50 percent inheritance share in a property currently owned by his living mother, as stated in her will,” campaign spokesperson Emilia Wierzbicka wrote on social media.
The press conference served as a supplement to this statement from the candidate’s team.
During the briefing, Czarnek publicly read the will drafted years ago by Jerzy Żywicki, as well as the notarial deed concluded with Karol and Marta Nawrocki.
“A drowning man will clutch at straws. And this is the straw Civic Platform’s leading politicians and Mr. Trzaskowski’s team have chosen to cling to,” Czarnek repeated.
He then continued:
“In 2007, Mr. Jerzy Żywicki became a resident of a municipal social care center in Gdańsk. Since then, he has been under the care of that facility. Karol Nawrocki met Mr. Żywicki and regularly visited him, offering support through his loneliness and illness.”
“This led to a response from Mr. Żywicki. His will, written in Gdańsk on October 20, 2011, reads as follows,” Czarnek said, before reading:
“I, the undersigned, bequeath all my belongings to Karol Nawrocki. I hereby disinherit my wife and children due to 37 years of no contact with the aforementioned persons.”
He continued:
“Later, Mr. Żywicki purchased a 28-square-meter studio apartment from the city of Gdańsk with a discount of up to 90 percent. He did so using funds loaned to him by Karol Nawrocki. In 2012, all parties appeared before a notary and signed a deed stating:”
“Karol and Marta Nawrocki declare they are aware of the technical condition of the aforementioned property and of any outstanding obligations related to its use. Jerzy Żywicki, along with Karol and Marta Nawrocki, agrees to conclude a sale agreement, under which Żywicki will transfer full ownership of the apartment—free of encumbrances and third-party claims—for the price of 120,000 złoty to Karol and Marta Nawrocki.”
