Nightmare in Ustka. Psychiatrist Examines Detained State Protection Service Officer — Decision Made

A psychiatrist has determined that the 44-year-old man who on Monday in Ustka attacked his wife, parents-in-law, and two children with a knife is fit to remain in a police cell and can undergo procedural activities. “These are planned for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday,” said the district prosecutor in Słupsk.

The head of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Słupsk, Patryk Wegner, reported that police officers managed on Tuesday to question the injured parents-in-law of the 44-year-old as witnesses. The man gave his testimony in Sławno, while the hospitalized woman was questioned in Słupsk. The prosecutor has yet to review the contents of their statements.

Suspect to be charged with murder

The prosecutor intends to charge the 44-year-old with the murder of his four-year-old daughter. The question of bringing charges of attempted murder against the remaining family members “is under analysis.” “We need to determine whether the man intended to kill everyone. The victims’ testimonies will help establish this,” Prosecutor Wegner emphasized.

An autopsy of the four-year-old is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday and will be carried out at the Medical University of Gdańsk.

As previously reported by the press officer of the Słupsk police, Sub-Inspector Jakub Bagiński, the 44-year-old officer of the State Protection Service attacked his family with a knife on Monday evening in an apartment in Ustka. The four-year-old girl died from her injuries; five people were wounded, including the attacker. The injured were transported to hospitals in Lębork, Sławno, and Słupsk, where the attacker’s wife and mother-in-law remain hospitalized.

In a statement to the media on Tuesday, Tomasz Kułakowski, deputy director of the Department of Social Communication at the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, said that the “officer has already been suspended.” Proceedings to dismiss him from service have also been initiated. He added that, at the ministry’s direction, the Internal Oversight Bureau of the Ministry has launched a review of the officer’s service record, including periodic examinations he had undergone.

Kułakowski noted that the man had served in the formation for 23 years and underwent routine examinations at the beginning of October. He served in Warsaw and “did not take direct part in any protective operations involving the most important persons in the state.” The 44-year-old had been staying in Ustka on vacation with his wife and children at his parents-in-law’s home.

Murder carries a penalty of up to life imprisonment.
