Outrage After Statement on TVP in Liquidation. National Broadcasting Council Demands Explanations

A statement claiming that “Poland supports Russia’s aggression against Ukraine” was broadcast on TVP in liquidation. The remark, made during a news program, prompted a response from the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT). The Chair of the Council has launched an inquiry and requested a full explanation from the broadcaster.

The controversial statement was made during coverage of a football tournament while discussing Polish referee Szymon Marciniak.

“Now Group G: Egypt – Iran, and a Polish angle. Referee Szymon Marciniak officiated the match despite protests from both football associations, which, for political reasons, did not want a Polish referee. Because Poland supports Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, but FIFA did not give in. Marciniak officiated the match very well,” viewers heard.

The statement stands in stark contrast to Poland’s actual position and actions regarding the war in Ukraine.

National Broadcasting Council Responds

The National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) moved quickly to address the matter. According to an official statement, Dr. Agnieszka Glapiak, Chair of the National Broadcasting Council, initiated explanatory proceedings concerning the TVP Info program Serwis Info Dzień, broadcast on June 29. During the program produced by TVP S.A. in liquidation, a statement was made suggesting that Poland supports Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

“Given the nature of the matter, the Chair of the National Broadcasting Council has requested that the broadcaster provide a full explanation regarding the circumstances surrounding the broadcast. After analyzing the broadcaster’s response, a decision on the matter will be made,” the Council stated.

The Council’s statement also emphasized the special responsibility borne by the public broadcaster. It noted that public communications – particularly news programs – concerning national security, foreign policy, and support for Ukraine should be prepared with the highest standards of diligence and accuracy.

KRRiT further stressed that statements capable of creating a false impression of Poland’s official position or undermining the country’s credibility on the international stage require careful examination – especially amid the ongoing information warfare accompanying the armed conflict.

Poland’s Position on the War

In its statement, the Council also recalled Poland’s actual stance toward Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It emphasized that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression, Poland has been among the countries actively supporting Ukraine through humanitarian assistance, political and diplomatic efforts, as well as initiatives aimed at strengthening regional security.

The Council noted that Poland has taken in millions of war refugees, participates in international efforts to enhance regional security, and has consistently advocated respect for international law and Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
