In a thrilling match during the 31st round of the PKO Ekstraklasa, Pogon Szczecin emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Legia Warsaw. The result has significant implications as Rakow Czestochowa officially secured their first-ever Polish championship title.
Rakow’s dreams came true after they unexpectedly suffered a 0-1 defeat against Korona Kielce, leaving their fate hanging in the balance. However, Legia Warsaw had an opportunity to not only secure the Polish title but also maintain their slim hopes for the championship with a win on the Baltic coast.
Pogon Szczecin, aiming to finish the season on the podium and surpass Lech Poznan, made it clear from the start that they would pose a formidable challenge to Legia. In the 10th minute, Mateusz Łęgowski, a Polish international, provided the home team with the lead. Luka Zahović headed the ball, and the Pogon midfielder displayed an excellent long-range shot. This early breakthrough boosted the spirits of the Szczecin team.
Throughout the match, both Damian Dąbrowski and Kamil Grosicki sought to increase Pogon’s advantage, but their efforts lacked precision. Under the guidance of coach Kosta Runjaić, who returned to Pogon after leaving the club last year, Legia struggled to threaten the Portowcy’s goal before halftime. However, the tide changed in the closing stages when Tomas Pekhart’s header rattled the crossbar but failed to alter the scoreline.
The second half saw Maciej Rosołek join Legia’s ranks on the pitch, and he quickly repaid the faith placed in him. Maik Nawrocki provided a well-placed through ball to Rosołek, who confidently struck the ball low past Pogon’s goalkeeper, Dante Stipica.
With this unexpected defeat, Legia Warsaw’s aspirations for the Polish championship title diminished further, while Rakow Czestochowa celebrated their remarkable achievement in securing the coveted trophy. Pogon Szczecin, meanwhile, showcased their determination to finish the season on a high note and outpace their rivals in the race for a podium finish, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the PKO Ekstraklasa season.
