Polish Ammunition Manufacturer to Build New Facility Amid Rising Defense Needs

Grupa Niewiadów, Poland’s largest private ammunition producer, has announced plans to build a high-caliber ammunition factory in Niewiadów, Łódź Voivodeship. The facility, with a planned annual production of 180,000 shells, is expected to be operational within two years. This $60 million investment comes in response to the growing demand for 155mm artillery shells, crucial for NATO forces, including Poland’s Krab and K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers.

    Strategic Importance of 155mm Ammunition

The 155mm caliber ammunition has become vital in modern warfare, as highlighted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The daily consumption of these shells is significant, with Ukrainian forces reportedly needing around 10,800 shells per day. The demand for these munitions is set to increase as Poland continues to strengthen its artillery capabilities, aiming to equip its forces with up to 1,000 howitzers in the coming years.

Grupa Niewiadów’s project is built on a legacy of precision equipment manufacturing. The company is revitalizing old infrastructure to establish a comprehensive production line, including a research and development center. Initially, the production will rely on international partners from India, Germany, and Slovakia, with oversight by Sweden’s Bofors. However, Grupa Niewiadów aims to eventually produce its own ammunition based on Polish designs.

    Employment and Future Developments

The new factory will employ 210 people, including 120 in the main production facility. The research center will focus on developing advanced ammunition technologies, supported by a ballistic testing site and other specialized equipment. Grupa Niewiadów’s investment marks a significant step in Poland’s defense industry, aligning with the country’s broader military modernization efforts.
