The theatrical adaptation of Wiesław Myśliwski’s acclaimed novel “Widnokrąg” was recently performed at the National Theatre of Iceland, showcasing one of the finest examples of 20th-century Polish prose. The production, brought to life by the Stefan Żeromski Theatre from Kielce, was part of Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage’s “Inspiring Culture” program. Minister Hanna Wróblewska, who attended the event, emphasized the importance of making Polish culture accessible to a broader audience, fostering cultural connections between Poland and Iceland.
Exploring Polish Heritage
“Widnokrąg,” adapted by Radosław Paczocha and directed by Michał Kotański, is a profound exploration of Polish rural life, blending autobiographical elements with broader social reflections. The play, which originally premiered in January 2019, delves into themes of cultural identity, the passage of time, and the impact of globalization on traditional village life.
The Reykjavik performance was made possible through the collaboration of the Stefan Żeromski Theatre, the National Theatre of Iceland, and the Polish Embassy. The “Inspiring Culture” program also funded supplementary activities, including creative workshops and open sessions on Polish culture and literature.
During her visit to Iceland, Minister Wróblewska also explored various cultural institutions, underscoring her commitment to strengthening international cultural ties.
