Portugal continues to shine as a premier tourist destination, with a record-breaking 30 million visitors in 2024, according to the Institute of Tourism Planning and Development (IPDT) in Lisbon. This milestone marks an 11% increase in tourist numbers compared to 2023, with industry revenues also reaching an all-time high.
During a gathering of tourism sector leaders in Gaia, northern Portugal, IPDT President Jorge Costa highlighted the unprecedented growth, describing 2024 as a “record year” for the country’s tourism industry. Forbes Portugal lauded the achievement as surpassing the “magic number” of 30 million tourists.
Preliminary government estimates reveal that visitors booked a staggering 80 million overnight stays, up by 13 million from the previous year. Additionally, tourism revenue soared to over €27 billion, representing an 8% increase compared to 2023.
Looking ahead, Costa expressed optimism for 2025, projecting another record-breaking year with an estimated 33 million tourists expected to visit Portugal.
