“In line with my earlier promise, I have decided to submit a motion to the Senate to hold a nationwide referendum. Poles must have the right to directly express their opinion on the consequences of the Green Deal,” announced today the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki.
The President has submitted a request to the Senate to hold a referendum on Poland’s rejection of the European Union’s climate policy. The proposed voting date has been set for September 27.
Referendum question
“Are you in favor of implementing the European Union’s climate policy, which has led to an increase in the cost of living for citizens, energy prices, and the cost of doing business and farming?” – this is the question Poles would be asked in the referendum proposed by President Karol Nawrocki.
As the head of state indicated – “I want to make it clear: this referendum is not against environmental protection or our membership in a united Europe. It is in favor of Poles’ right to decide on the pace of changes, their scope, and the costs they bear. It is a decision for the future, for normality, but above all it is an expression of the right to freely and sovereignly decide about our own fate.”
Democracy does not mean that citizens merely learn about decisions – it means they have an influence over them. Democracy requires that citizens decide the direction in which state affairs are heading. A referendum is the best tool to achieve this goal – as stated in the justification.
The President emphasized that “the Senate of the Republic of Poland will face an important choice. Consent to the referendum will be an expression of respect for the voice of citizens. Lack of consent – a decision that citizens will also evaluate.”
“My task is to keep my word. I said I would be the voice of Poles. Today, I pass that voice on – to where it should resonate the strongest. The Nation is the sovereign. The Nation makes the decision,” he added.
