President Karol Nawrocki met with the First President of the Supreme Court, Małgorzata Manowska, and the President of the Constitutional Tribunal, Bogdan Święczkowski. The information was released by the Chancellery of the President. Earlier, Nawrocki had said, among other things, that he would soon appoint a presidential council tasked with drafting a new constitution.
“The talks concerned the state of the rule of law in Poland and the situation within the justice system. The functioning of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Tribunal was discussed – institutions crucial for maintaining the constitutional order of the state, but also for safeguarding citizens’ rights,” the Chancellery’s statement read.
Repairing the legal system
Earlier, during an interview with Radio Wnet, the president was asked about issues related to the rule of law. During the conversation, he spoke about the creation of two councils. One would focus on the new constitution. “It has not yet been established because this is a very complex process. We are talking about a constitution that is nearly 30 years old, so selecting the right scholars for this council […] is a complicated process,” he said.
“This process will be completed soon,”
he declared.
The presidential proposal
The second presidential council would work on repairing the state system. When asked about the “rule-of-law” bill put forward by the Minister of Justice, Waldemar Żurek, which, according to many experts, is unlawful, he replied that he would propose his own draft.
“The Council for the Repair of the State System will prepare concrete legislative solutions which, as president, let me remind you, one without any political burden, I will propose to the Polish parliament. And if that fails, I will turn to the Senate with a request for a referendum,”
he stated.
