President Karol Nawrocki’s appearance at PGE Narodowy became one of the notable moments surrounding Poland’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in the World Cup qualifiers. The head of state, who had earlier confirmed his attendance during a meeting in Mińsk Mazowiecki, was greeted with chants of his name from the Polish ultras. The reception stood in clear contrast to that given to Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the previous international in Kaunas, where fans offered him no such warmth.
While the stands provided their own spectacle, the match delivered a surprisingly balanced contest against a heavily favoured Dutch side. Jan Urban’s team, already assured of a place in the World Cup play-offs after Finland’s unexpected defeat to Malta, entered the match with a sense of freedom but also with a bold tactical approach forced by several injuries.
Poland began aggressively and nearly opened the scoring in the second minute through Nicola Zalewski. After an early spell of Dutch pressure and the loss of Sebastian Szymański to injury, the hosts struck with precision late in the first half. Robert Lewandowski released Jakub Kamiński on a counterattack, and the winger finished the move with remarkable composure.
The Dutch equalized shortly after the interval, with Memphis Depay capitalizing on chaos inside the Polish penalty area. Despite several promising offensive moves – including a dangerous attempt from Lewandowski saved instinctively by Bart Verbruggen – Urban’s team could not reclaim the lead. Still, the performance reflected resilience and tactical ambition, offering promising signs ahead of the final group match in Malta and the decisive playoff campaign in March 2026.
Poland – Netherlands 1:1
