Exotic Pets in Poland to Keep as Pets: Capybara

Dogs, cats, and even hamsters are by far the most popular pets in Poland. However, many people prefer to challenge themselves and try to adopt an exotic and unusual animal. We present a list of exotic pets that can be extremely attractive choices for potential and adventurous breeders. However, one must keep in mind that these are creatures with special needs. Taking them home comes with a huge responsibility.

The great capybara is a rodent that lives in South America. It can be found in several countries – Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina. Its population can also be found in Central America, specifically Panama. Although the capybara population has declined in recent years, it is not an endangered species, in fact, in some areas, it is considered a pest.

Why does a rodent that is called a large guinea pig choose areas that are close to water? Capybara skin is extremely delicate and prone to dryness. Access to water not only ensures proper care and constant hydration but also protects against predators that hunt rodents.

Capybaras are excellent swimmers – they can hold their breath for up to several minutes underwater. If they have permanent access to water, they can adapt to different conditions – they can be found in swamps, grasslands, and tropical forests.

We used to see capybaras only in zoos. Today, if you have the right budget and a large space, you can also raise capybaras yourself. We must be prepared for the fact that the largest rodent in the world will need specific conditions.

This is not an animal that we can keep indoors – we need to provide it with an enclosure that will be at least 50 square meters. Because it is a herd animal, it requires a large living space so that it does not feel squeezed. Unsuitable conditions will lead to a quick death.

The price of a capybara is about 5-7 thousand zlotys. We must remember that these animals are herd animals, so buying one individual will be missing the point, because the animal will quickly die of loneliness. It’s best to buy a male and two females – in such a case you have to be prepared to pay about 15-20 thousand zlotys.

There are several capybara breeders in Poland, but it is also possible to turn to foreign breeders and bring the animal into the country. It’s a good idea to look carefully at photos of the pets and kennel before buying to make sure they are well cared for.

If you raise a capybara from a young age, it is possible to tame it. The easiest way to do this is to bribe her with treats. The animals will then start eating and will come up to say hello themselves.  When animals are present, move slowly so as not to frighten them.
