“Smiling Plunder of Poland.” Morawiecki Vows to Expose Government Corruption

“The smiling plunder of Poland has crossed all boundaries,” said former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at a press conference in Warsaw today, as he addressed concerns about growing irregularities within state institutions. He also took the opportunity to comment on the upcoming presidential election.

The event, organized by Law and Justice (PiS) politicians, focused on what they claim is a widespread issue: party loyalists being appointed to public posts instead of qualified professionals. “Today we’re launching a nationwide campaign, and day by day we’ll be exposing the scale of this pathology,” Morawiecki announced.

He pointed to the case of Sławomir Nitras—an ally of Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and overseer of the state-owned Totalizator Sportowy—who allegedly hired an internet troll with a salary of 17,000 PLN per month. “What was he doing there? You only need to look online, scroll through social media, to see how this ‘smiling coalition’ of Tusk, Trzaskowski, and Hołownia operates. These are facts we’re now bringing to light—and we’ll continue to do so in every region of Poland,” Morawiecki said.

“Let’s defend Poland from them. One of Civic Platform’s key pledges—point 68 on their list of promises—was to hold transparent, merit-based hiring competitions for public posts. And what’s the reality? We see it clearly. This is happening daily, across the country, in every corner of Poland,” the former prime minister added.

Morawiecki warned that the situation could worsen if the opposition gains more power: “This plundering will only intensify if—God forbid—Trzaskowski wins the presidency. I hope Poles won’t allow this ‘smiling Poland’ to keep smiling as it robs the country.”

Public Whistleblowers Speak Out

According to PiS MP Waldemar Buda, the campaign is being fueled by ordinary citizens. “Most of the reports we receive about abuses come from regular employees at public institutions and private firms. We stand in solidarity with them and symbolically mark our awareness of what’s happening inside these organizations,” Buda wrote on social media, alongside a video of activists posting “Smiling Plunder of Poland” posters on the headquarters of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
