Survey Reveals Growing Polish Support for Ukrainian Peace Talks with Russia

A recent poll conducted by United Surveys for Wirtualna Polska indicates a significant shift in Polish public opinion regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to the survey, over half of the respondents (54.5%) believe it is time for Ukraine to initiate peace negotiations with Russia.

The survey, which asked participants whether they think Ukraine should start peace negotiations with Russia, found that 18% strongly agree and an additional 36.5% somewhat agree with the idea. This sentiment is notably higher among voters of the ruling coalition compared to those of the opposition.

On the contrary, a minority of respondents oppose the commencement of negotiations, with only 7.1% firmly against and 19% leaning towards no. Additionally, 19.4% of those surveyed were undecided, indicating a complex mix of views within Poland.

The poll, conducted between July 26 and 28, 2024, reflects a growing war fatigue among Poles, as the survey authors suggest.

Tensions and Military Dynamics Complicate Negotiations

Despite the apparent local support for peace talks, the prospect of such negotiations remains uncertain. Reports from The Washington Post highlight that planned meetings in Qatar between Ukrainian and Russian delegates—to discuss halting attacks on energy infrastructure—have been jeopardized by Ukrainian military advances in the Kursk region. These successes have reportedly stalled the negotiation process.

Furthermore, the American Newspaper reported a statement from a Russian diplomat accusing Ukraine of escalating the conflict, leading to a postponement of discussions, though not a complete abandonment.

    Ukrainian Offensive Intensifies

Amidst these diplomatic tensions, Ukrainian forces have intensified their military operations. Since August 6, Ukrainian troops have launched an offensive in the Kursk region of Russia, capturing more than 80 towns and covering an area of 1,150 square kilometers.

The Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, confirmed that the operation is proceeding as planned and the situation is under control. The captured Russian soldiers are anticipated to be part of future prisoner exchanges.
