The message that Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski addressed to the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, regarding the situation at the Southern Hospital has been made public. The former Head of Surgery described serious problems related to the management of the facility and the functioning of the Emergency Department. The letter also included allegations against Dawid Kacprzyk. The doctor assured that he possesses documents, data, and statistics confirming his account.
New findings regarding the Southern Hospital
With each passing day, more shocking reports are emerging about the scandal at the Southern Hospital. Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski, former Head of Surgery and one of the doctors raising the alarm about the situation at the facility, spoke during a live interview on Kanał Zero about scandalous incidents in the Emergency Department that led to patient deaths. At the time, the department was managed by Dawid Kacprzyk, a doctor and a city councilor of the Civic Platform (KO).
Jędrzejewski claims that Kacprzyk felt untouchable due to political backing. According to the doctor, references were made in conversations to, among others, the Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski and his deputy Renata Kaznowska.
Message to Rafał Trzaskowski
In the message addressed to the Mayor of Warsaw, published by Kanał Zero, Dr. Jędrzejewski described the entire situation at the Southern Hospital. He emphasized that he took over the surgical department at a time when it lacked both equipment and staff, and then built a team that now performs thousands of procedures annually. He also pointed to the department’s financial results, which reportedly generated a surplus of PLN 7.8 million despite the hospital’s overall losses.
The doctor further warned that, in his opinion, the method of managing the facility is non-substantive and politicized. In the letter, he strongly addressed the functioning of the Emergency Department, pointing to issues of procedural oversight, internal conflicts, and concerns about patient safety. He stressed that he has documents, data, and statistics to support his claims, while also acknowledging the professional consequences he may face for disclosing the matter.
Below we publish the full text of Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski’s message:
“Dear Mr. Mayor,
I am addressing you as a doctor, a citizen, and the Head of the Surgical Department of the Southern Hospital with deep concern and a sense of responsibility for the situation prevailing in this municipal healthcare institution.
I assumed this position two and a half years ago at an extremely difficult moment for the department. The hospital, which existed solely as a modern but empty infrastructure, lacked not only equipment and furnishings but also a medical team. At that time, the surgical department had neither doctors nor nurses.
I built a team from scratch that today performs thousands of operations annually. It operates efficiently, responsibly, and, in my opinion, with full commitment and dignity. It is a team that Warsaw can be proud of. Despite unfavorable conditions and a lack of basic organizational resources, including the still unresolved tender for hospital furnishings, we managed to create a department that not only meets medical standards but also generates profit. Under the model I proposed, my remuneration was tied to the department’s financial result after deducting the cost of my salary. The results: 4,000 procedures annually. Financial outcome of the surgical department: PLN 7.8 million surplus in subsequent years, despite the hospital’s overall losses. This is concrete, documented work for the benefit of patients.
It is worth emphasizing that most surgical departments in Poland operate on the verge of profitability or incur losses, which makes the results of our department all the more noteworthy and deserving of support. Despite these achievements, I encountered a barrier in the form of the hospital’s management style – non-substantive, politicized, and demoralizing. The person serving as Medical Director comes from internal medicine and clearly focuses their actions exclusively on that department, ignoring the needs and results of surgery.
The most alarming situation concerns Dr. Dawid Kacprzyk, who, while only in his first year of specialization, was de facto allowed to manage the Emergency Department. He performs procedures for which he is not authorized, often without supervision from appropriately qualified specialists. He fuels conflicts, insinuates, and provokes patients into filing complaints for which he is, in fact, responsible. His attitude and actions are unacceptable to both the medical and nursing staff.
I informed the hospital’s CEO about this in writing. However, the consequence of this intervention may be my immediate dismissal. I am prepared for that. Before it happens, however, I would like to be heard. I believe that it will be you – and only you – who will be willing to look deeper into the situation. I am ready for any confrontation. I possess documents, data, statistics, and information that confirm my claims. I am fully aware of the responsibility for the words stated here.
I am omitting a set of information that, despite this being a private message, I do not wish to put in writing. Mr. Mayor, I cannot remain silent. I simply cannot. As a doctor who has operated on over 40,000 patients in my life, as a citizen, and as a voter, I appeal to you for personal intervention.
The management of the Southern Hospital is deviating from ethical, common-sense, and substantive norms. This is not only about my position. It is about the future of this facility, patient safety, and the dignity of doctors’ work.
Sincerely,
Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski
Head of the Surgical Department of the Southern Hospital”
