“The proposal for civil partnerships concluded before a notary is not only blatantly unconstitutional but also aims to replace traditional marriage with pseudo-unions,” wrote Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński on the X platform. The leaders of the Polish People’s Party (PSL) and the New Left discussed the key assumptions of the proposal today.
Civil partnerships. A joint initiative by the Left and the PSL
Today, the leaders of the New Left and the Polish People’s Party – Włodzimierz Czarzasty and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz – presented the details of a draft law on informal partnerships. In theory, it is to be a government-backed proposal that, among other things, would regulate issues such as inheritance and tax settlements for people living in informal relationships.
According to MPs, the bill regulating civil partnerships is meant to be a compromise solution jointly developed by the PSL and the Left. However, these are two ideologically very different parties. The opposition views the proposal critically.
PiS leader: This is an ultra-leftist solution
The head of Law and Justice (PiS), Jarosław Kaczyński, published his opinion online regarding the proposal prepared by the PSL and the Left. The leader of the largest opposition party stated that “the proposal for civil partnerships concluded before a notary is not only blatantly unconstitutional but also aims to replace traditional marriage with pseudo-unions.” He emphasized that this is an ultra-leftist solution that strikes at the fundamental social unit, which is the family.
Meanwhile, Law and Justice (PiS) MP Przemysław Czarnek pointed out that “any manipulation involving marriage is a violation of Article 18 of the Constitution, which explicitly states: only marriage as a union between a woman and a man is under the legal protection and care of the Republic of Poland.“
