“All those who took part in the forcible takeover of the prosecutor’s office will answer for it before the court, and today’s day will only increase the sentence,” said Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński after the vote on Zbigniew Ziobro’s immunity.
On Friday, the Sejm lifted Zbigniew Ziobro’s parliamentary immunity and granted permission for his detention and temporary arrest. The prosecutor’s office led by Waldemar Żurek intends to bring 26 charges against the politician.
The result of the votes in the Sejm was immediately commented on by Law and Justice (PiS) chairman Jarosław Kaczyński, who said there had been no doubt about what decision would be made.
He emphasized that “in an obvious way, Ziobro cannot count on a fair trial.” “At the moment when the prosecutor’s office was seized by force, it became a group acting illegally,” he said.
“I believe it may take some time, but all those who took part in it will answer for it before the court, and today’s day will only increase the sentence,” he declared.
When asked whether this situation poses a problem for Law and Justice (PiS), he confirmed it. “[…] For me, it was obvious that the Round Table agreement should have been treated as a tactical maneuver and followed by the crushing of the communists. That wasn’t done, and now […] even Mr. Czarzasty will become the Marshal,” he said.
Asked whether, in his view, Ziobro is completely innocent, he replied:
“If there were independent courts and a normal prosecutor’s office in Poland, this could be verified, but in the current situation, the presumption of innocence is the only answer to what is happening in Poland right now. I have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever that Zbigniew Ziobro committed any crimes,” he said.
