“At this moment, apart from Poland, there is no one who would want to block Mercosur”, said Donald Tusk. This means that the agreement, harmful to Polish agriculture, will enter into force.
Today, the College of Commissioners of the European Union (EU) is set to approve the final version of the trade agreement between the EU and the South American bloc Mercosur. After being adopted by the European Commission, the document will go to the Council of the EU and the European Parliament.
We have repeatedly reported on how damaging this agreement is – particularly in the context of European, including Polish, agriculture.
Nevertheless, the government under Donald Tusk has not taken steps to block yet another EU whim.
Tusk on the EU-Mercosur agreement
During today’s press conference at the 33rd International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO), Tusk, when asked about the agreement with Mercosur, said that “it will probably be adopted by a majority of votes.” However, he stated that Poland would oppose it, “because we really want to take care of, or at least demonstrate that we will not give up when it comes to the interests of Polish agricultural producers.”
At the same time, he admitted that Poland currently has no partners for blocking it. – “At this moment, apart from Poland, there is no one who would want to block Mercosur“, he said. – “This very morning I spoke with the Polish commissioner, Minister Piotr Serafin, who has taken on the burden of explaining what Polish specificity means. I have reason to believe that we will obtain from the European Commission not only declarations but also practical decisions concerning defense and control mechanisms.”
Tusk stressed that “we will not rest until the defense mechanisms are in place.”
Can these words really be trusted…?
