Tusk’s Government Seeks to Dictate What President Nawrocki Can Say to Trump

During a press conference following the meeting of the Cabinet Council at the Prime Minister’s Office, remarks were made that caused considerable amusement among commentators. Radosław Sikorski openly admitted that Donald Tusk’s government had “decided” what President Karol Nawrocki is allowed to say, and what he is not allowed to say, during his visit to the United States on September 3.

An attempt to restrict the President

Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski stated at the press conference that President Karol Nawrocki would receive “instructions” from the government regarding his visit to the United States:

We have adopted the position of the Council of Ministers ahead of the president’s upcoming visit to the United States, that is, what the president should say, and what he should not say,” he declared during the conference at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.

Commentators point out that the attempt to impose restrictions on what the president may say in a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump is a blatant undermining of the constitutional role of the President of Poland as the highest representative of the state in international affairs. Furthermore, the problem lies in the fact that Donald Tusk’s relations with the Trump administration are extremely poor, which does not bode well for the success of such “guidelines” in bilateral talks.

It is worth recalling that on September 3, Karol Nawrocki will meet with the U.S. president in Washington. This will be his first foreign visit since taking office.
