The government spokesman has stated that the US ambassador to Poland was invited to the Foreign Ministry following the broadcasting of a report by an American-owned TV company, which asserted that Pope John Paul II aided in concealing child sexual abuse prior to his papacy.

On Thursday, Mark Brzezinski visited the Foreign Ministry following the airing of a TVN report by the US-owned media conglomerate Discovery. The report investigated the cases of three priests who were under the authority of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, the then metropolitan of Kraków, who later became Pope John Paul II.

The authors of the report asserted that Wojtyła was aware of the priests’ abuses but still allowed them to remain in the Church, and potentially even aided in concealing them.

The allegation concerning Pope John Paul II, one of the most venerated individuals in Polish history, provoked a vehement reaction from government representatives.

“When we have any issues that we want to clear up between partners, then we simply talk,” Piotr Mueller, the government spokesman, told reporters on Friday.

“We consider the Americans… as perhaps our most important ally when it comes to security,” Mueller went on to say. “Therefore, when we have any doubts, we talk to our partners.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement earlier that the ambassador was invited to discuss the operations of a certain television channel. Piotr Wawrzyk, a deputy foreign minister, was the one to receive the ambassador.

Mueller asserted that the report might form part of the Russian-Belarusian hybrid conflict.

Mueller stated that multiple activities, such as those conducted by Russia, that may give the appearance of having an impact, like in regards to the story of the Poland-Belarus border, are part of a hybrid and disinformation war.

Recently in Germany, it has been reported that Poland is mistreating migrants from the Middle East and Africa at the Polish-Belarusian border. This has raised concerns about human rights abuses.
