What Are the Reasons Behind Rafał Trzaskowski’s Defeat? Poles Identify Three Key Factors

Public perception of the “October 15 Coalition,” the performance of Donald Tusk’s government, and the financial situation of Polish families—these three elements may have determined Rafał Trzaskowski’s loss in the presidential election. Poles shared their views in a survey conducted by the Nationwide Research Group (OGB), a polling institute known for its accurate exit poll predictions in recent presidential elections in Poland. In addition to gauging voter sentiment, OGB posed three key questions to respondents.

The first question asked, “What do you feel when you think about the ruling ‘October 15 Coalition’?” A total of 22.8% of respondents reported “indifference and apathy,” while one in five expressed “disappointment and regret.” Fear and anxiety were cited by 14.5%, and 11.4% said they felt anger and frustration.

Only a minority expressed positive sentiments. About one-third of respondents offered favorable responses: 17.7% indicated “joy and satisfaction,” 11.4% chose “pride and contentment,” and just 3.3% reported “enthusiasm and excitement.”

Lack of Enthusiasm for Tusk’s Government

Donald Tusk’s government also received predominantly negative evaluations. A significant 33.5% rated it very poorly, while 13.7% described it as rather poor. Another 22.7% expressed indifference. One in five respondents viewed the government as “rather good,” and only 9.2% considered it “very good.”

Respondents were also asked about their household financial situation. For the majority (51.9%), it remained unchanged compared to the previous year. However, 26.5% said their situation had worsened, while the remaining group reported an improvement.

In the immediate aftermath of Karol Nawrocki’s victory, political analyst Wojciech Szacki remarked that a detailed analysis of the KO candidate’s defeat would come in due course. Nonetheless, he pointed to one key issue, asking: “How could you waste a year and a half like that?” He added on platform X: “You should have governed better.”
