160th anniversary of the establishment of the National Museum in Warsaw [VIDEO]

The National Museum in Warsaw was originally founded in 1862 as the Museum of Fine Arts and is currently one of the oldest art museums in the country. Today the visitors can admire the museum’s collection of 830,000 works of art from Poland and abroad. It includes paintings, sculptures, coins and even more from ancient times to the present.

A part of the collection was digitalised in 2011 and now is available online – over 172,000 objects can be found in virtual space. Another reason to be proud of is the group of relics and monuments (about 67,000) that can be explored during the virtual visit on the Digital NMW website.

In connection with the jubilee, the museum initiates a series of publications devoted to the history of the Museum on the website. The work of donors and employees whose knowledge, skills, persistence, and passion allowed them to create the collection through decades needs to be in the limelight. The everyday life of the Museum is also the topic of this year’s anniversary publications.
