Both sets were very demanding and both tennis players were determined. Once Pegula broke Iga at 3:2, Iga decided to make up. Świątek did her best and till the end of the match, she gave her rival only two more points. The second set, which could be called a festival of breaks, took a strange course. As many as 10 of the 12 games ended in a break of serve. Świątek served twice to win the match, but in the end, it was the tie-break that decided her victory. In the tie-break, the rankings leader was slightly better.

Iga Świątek reached the semi-finals of the US Open for the first time in her career. On her way to the top four, she had earlier won against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, Americans Sloane Stephens and Lauren Davis and Germany’s Jule Niemeier. She will now face a Belarusian. A few hours earlier, Aryna Sabalenka won against Czech Karolina Pliskova 6:1, 7:6 (4).
Świątek has played against Sabalenka four times before. She succumbed to her last year in the season-ending WTA Finals, and in the current series, she has beaten her easily three times – in Doha, Stuttgart, and Rome.
